Features that make the Technological Network on HIV/AIDS unique(Text added in 2007-11-06 and updated in 2007-11-19)
According to its Rules of Procedures, the Network aims to enhance its member countries' capacity in incorporating the flexibilities with respect to the management of the Intellectual Property Rights established by the relevant international agreements, especially the TRIPS Agreement and the Doha Declaration;
The Network is a South-to-South initiative that relies on a process of horizontal technical cooperation, based on reciprocal learning mechanisms with the ultimate goal of enhancing developing countries´ responses to AIDS epidemic.
The Network will address the main issues related to the process of scaling up national responses to AIDS epidemic, such as: local production of AIDS commodities and opportunistic infections medicines, as well as its related good manufacturing practices; strategies for the management of the Intellectual Property Rights and its related consequences for public health; and bioethical issues related to access to AIDS prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.
The Network aims at promoting mechanisms for the involvement of the civil society from member countries towards monitoring its ultimate goal: to enhance scaled-up access to AIDS treatment and care.
